How can I get my students excited about grammar?

Problem
You want your 6th graders to see grammar as something they use, not another set of rules to memorize. At this age, worksheets can quickly feel like compliance rather than learning.
The Hack — Grammar Detective
Turn grammar into a short daily hunt using sentences students actually care about.
Why It Works
Grammar becomes more engaging when students notice, debate, manipulate, and improve language instead of simply labeling parts of speech. A little choice and friendly competition can make a five-minute grammar lesson feel more like a puzzle.
Steps

Start with an interesting sentence from a song title, school announcement, funny made-up scenario, novel, or teacher-created “terrible sentence.”

Give students a mission: Find the verb. What could we change? Where would punctuation help?

Let students work with a partner for 60–90 seconds before sharing.

Ask them to hack the sentence—make it funnier, clearer, more dramatic, or more precise while keeping the target grammar intact.

Celebrate clever revisions rather than simply announcing the “right answer.”
What You Can Do Tomorrow
Put this on the board: “My brother ran into the kitchen screaming like a maniac.” Ask: How many different meanings can punctuation or word placement create? Give pairs three minutes to experiment, then compare versions.
Variations & Inclusivity
Offer sentence stems such as “I changed ___ because ___.” Let students respond on mini-whiteboards or privately before speaking. Pair multilingual learners strategically and invite them to compare how the same idea works in another language.
Troubleshooting
If competition gets too loud, make the challenge collaborative: Can the whole class create five strong revisions? If students focus only on being funny, require them to explain the grammatical move that made their version work.
Quick Checks
It’s working when students start debating sentences, voluntarily suggesting revisions, and using grammar vocabulary to explain why a change works.
